Our History

Pediatric Surgical Associates is a long-standing medical practice currently consisting of 8 Pediatric Surgeons and 4 Pediatric Urologists who specialize in surgical problems of infants and children.

By virtue of our size -the largest group of private-practicing pediatric surgeons in the United States- Pediatric Surgical Associates has performed thousands of surgical procedures on infants and children. This represents the majority of tertiary care operations in the Minnesota region. The quality of pediatric surgical care provided by our surgeons is recognized nationally as a model of care.

Examples of procedures performed include:

  1. Common surgical problems in infants and children such as inguinal and umbilical hernias, undescended testes, appendicitis, pyloric stenosis, circumcision, hypospadias, and ureteral reimplantation.

  2. Repair, correction, or reconstruction of rare congenital anomalies in newborns involving the head and neck, chest and lungs, abdominal wall, gastrointestinal tract, and genitourinary systems. As an example, the surgeons of Pediatric Surgical Associates have participated in the separation of many sets of conjoined twins.


  3. Solid tumors in children.

In addition to the clinical practice of surgery, Pediatric Surgical Associates is integrally involved in the education of surgical residents and medical students from the Mayo Clinic, University of Minnesota and Hennepin County Medical Center. Members of the group also participate in ongoing clinical research projects, contribute actively to national pediatric surgical organizations, and have authored chapters in current pediatric surgical texts.

This profile is the result of 75 years of dedicated physicians servicing the medical-surgical needs of children. Since January 1985, when 6 pediatric surgeons practiced full time at 3 separate locations, and utilizing the services of 5 full time employees, our practice has grown steadily.

Presently, 8 pediatric surgeons and 4 pediatric urologists practice full time, and our support staff of 24 employees assists us in serving the needs of our patients. We have 9 separate locations with which to serve you, and all of our offices are networked together to provide seamless care to our patients.
